CRONACA IN INGLESE - Australian Kate Bates (Ton Van Bemmelen Sports) has won the second stage of the Vuelta Ciclista Castilla y Leon in Zamora ahead of Anouska Van Der Zee (Farm Frites-Hartol) after a well-timed escape in the final 10km of the 104km stage.
It was a day of frequent attacks and splits in the peloton with the field eventually reduced to a main bunch of 69 riders.
Adrie Visser (Farm Frites-Hartol) took the first of the day's meta volante sprints, after just 8km, and the attacks started in earnest soon after, with Barbara Cazzaniga (Michela Fanini) Trixie Worrack (Nurnberger), Sara Carrigan (AIS) and Anna Ramirez (Spanish National Team) getting away and spending some five kilometers off the front before being caught.
After the second sprint, Olivia Gollan (AIS), Fabiana Luperini (Let's Go Finland) and Theresa Senff (Germany) gained a few hundred metres on the peloton - enough to get them over the third category Alto De Villadepera in the lead.
As the peloton reunited after the summit, Eneritz Iturriaga (Let´s go Finland) attacked, and a group of some 26 riders went after her, led by Gollan and team-mate Oenone Wood.
Iturriaga still led over the day's second climb, with a 50 second lead over the chasers. Gollan and Wood led the pursuit over the summit, gaining Gollan enough points to put her in the mountains jersey.
At the 78km mark, Iturriaga was caught and a couple of kilometers later the lead half of the peloton reunited. Numerous breaks tried to get away over the next several kilometres, but all were unsuccessful until Bates and van Derzee made their move with 10km to go.
Seeing a chance to gain some time on GC, the pair quickly built a 20 second advantage and powered two-up toward the finish, beating the chasing peloton by 17 seconds. Regina Schleicher (Safi-Pasta Zara Manhattan) took the bunch sprint for third.
Tomorrow's third and final stage into Salamanca is a rolling 104km journey that should see a sprinters' showdown at the finale.
